The nineteenth century saw huge changes in design and technology, with middle-class homes seeing drastic changes from the time of Queen Victoria’s accesion in 1837 to her death in 1901.

This book looks at the social history of rooms in the Victorian home and at how, thanks to industrialized mass production, people were empowered to make choices about how to decorate their homes. Numerous exterior and interior styles were available as Victorian architects and designers grappled towards a new decorative language by testing the best from the past. This meant that families could choose to live in an Italianate villa, a semi-detached Gothic or a Queen Anne terraced home. The changes implemented during the Victorian era resulted in a brand of interior design and asthetic still relevant and appreciated today.

Many are in Pacific Heights and at Cottage Row, between Sutter and Bush. A block of Queen Anne row houses line Alamo Square and there are some fine examples on Lombard, the crookedest street in the in the world. It is between Leavenworth and Hyde Streets and you can walk it or drive it and the gadens are lovely.

San Francisco Victorian homes—including the fabulous mansions of Pacific Heights, the famous Victorian Cow Hollow commercial district, and Victorian houses in the Western Addition, the outer Mission and the Haight.

The Haas-Lillienthal House is one of the few survivors of the 1906 quake so close to Van Ness Ave — it’s gorgeous and there are tours most days; pls. see website below. SF Heritage also tours whole neighborhoods with gorgeous architecture — definitely worth checking it out if you like small architectural details.
