What types of windows won’t accept double glazing?
Question by arpi: What types of windows won’t accept double glazing?
I’ve just moved house and the new house is a Victorian (1900) house in London. The windows are all single glazed and wooden (sash and casement). I’m thinking of replacing the single glass with double glazing but don’t know whether the windows will take it. Is there a minimum thickness or something like that I need to check out?

Not 100% sure you’d be able to do that you might want to look into buying new upvc frames with double glazing fitted you could take a trip to your local glaziers and ask a few questions there also there are building regs to adhere to and info on those is in the link below ok,good luck.

You would do better to just buy outside storm windows. They are much less expensive than having the retrofit done and are much easier to get by historic commitees. The payback on storms is much quicker also. Look for a good quality with a HARD low e covering and you will be golden.
You can’t add a second pane to an existing window. You have to replace it.
It IS possible to put double glazed units into single glazed frames using ‘stepped’ units. However these will be a minimum thickness of 14mm- which will probably be too thick for a sash window.
Also the advantage of only having a 6mm cavity( the minimum you can get) is minimal in terms of heat saving compared to single glass.
Your best bet is to have new PVCU windows – you can get these as a mock sash – or, if these would be too costly, to look at other ways to conserve heat loss such as thick, full length curtains, or secondary glazing using either plastic sheet or a variety of plastic or glass sheets in a frame.
Your local glass merchant should be able to help.

A jig saw puzzle and a mystery all rolled into one. I loved it! What isn’t mentioned in the directions is to start at level one so you compile all the clues and answers to each level. Time has no concept when doing this puzzle.

This is truly a wonderfully conceived and executed software program for the puzzle lover. From the graphic detail to the historical clips, the whole program is fascinating and great fun. Walking around inside the mansion is a blast (especially for me since I was brought up not to snoop around other people’s houses….it’s not nice!). I just ordered Notre Dame Cathedral today…then the Bavarian Castle…and the Wrebbit web site is talking about the Orient Express coming out in February 2000. I’m hooked. Other reviewers noted the problem with the trays and that is true. You really have to watch where you’re clicking. I also made a mistake when doing level one and had to start the whole puzzle all over again. It turned out to be good training, and I learned to be more careful. If you truly love puzzles you will have a hard time finding anything better than Wrebbit 3D.

The first of the 3-d puzzles I purchased. I am now addicted. Great graphics, lots of hours of fun. I didn’t even get into solving the mystery yet, as I enjoyed putting the puzzle together. Even after I finished the last level, I went back and put the puzzle together again and again. I ordered the Bavarian Castle and working on it now. I will be ordering the Notre Dame soon.

I bought this game because I enjoy computer games and don’t have a place to set up a traditional jigsaw puzzle. Now I’m hooked! The interface was easy to use. However, I didn’t like the tray sorting system. If you’re trigger happy with the mouse, your trays end up getting combined or dumped pretty easily. I ended up not using it. I was concerned that the exploration part would be kind of skimpy but was pleasantly surprised. There are more puzzles once you’re inside the mansion as well as the mystery to solve. The graphics were very good. It was also neat to see the mansion from the inside and be able to identify features that you put together in the puzzle segment of the game. The attention to detail was great. I can’t wait to do the Castle and Notre Dame!

This software offers several delightful layers of problem solving. Even if you consider yourself a very good puzzle solver, start with the tutorial and level one and work your way up. This allows you to really get a good feel for the many details and aspects of the 3-D puzzle. Not only do you feel good when you complete construction of the mansion (no matter what level), you then get to go inside the virtual mansion and begin solving the mystery. Each level offers more clues and gives you more access to the many rooms in the mansion. I have had no compatibility problems (Mac OS 8.6). This is a fun, well designed and challenging puzzle.
