Question by GreasyTony: What do you think about the devastated people in Texas that have illegals helping them out?
I’m so glad they had luck finding people to help them out in their of need. Do you think they’ll get any special treatment or recognition for this? I certainly hope so!

Illegal Latino Immigrants Labor to Rebuild Texas

PASADENA, Texas (AP) – All along the Texas coast, Latino immigrants are hauling away fallen trees, slashing through storm-tangled brush, patching punctured roofs.

On working-class corners, on ladders in front of Victorian houses, in the yards of ornate mansions, crews of men in dusty jeans, sturdy work boots and baseball caps are nearly as omnipresent in the post-Hurricane Ike landscape as blue tarps on rooftops.

These workers, who get picked up off the street by homeowners looking for quick, cheap labor, are helping to rebuild the devastated cities of southeast Texas. Many of them are here illegally.

There’s reason to believe it will: After Hurricane Katrina, thousands of Latino immigrants streamed to New Orleans for jobs in construction, carpentry and cleanup.

They’re also being exploited by private contractors like KBR to do work in Louisiania. Many Americans complained that people were already financially devastated by the disaster, yet Bush & Co. favorite contractor doesn’t even have the decency to use tax dollars to give Americans much needed jobs (they’re just taking the billions and keeping as much as they can). It’s all very sad.

Americans devastated by the destruction, loss of their jobs, etc. need this work so that they have the wherewithal to rebuild their lives. Yet all these lawbreakers swarm in, take the jobs, pay no taxes, and contribute nothing to real reconstruction.

There are also thousands of American carpenters, etc. around the country who need those jobs!

well it seems like some very important people do appreciate their job very much :

In the storm’s aftermath, however, Mayor Bill White said homeowners need to find help where they can.

“I like to see people doing it, rather than letting debris pile up and people not getting roofs fixed,” said White, who has a reputation for welcoming immigrants.

….. here in Dallas we also have a major which was elected by the people of Dallas even though he was known for hiring undocumented . most people do not care whether those helping them are documented or not , they are looking for help and they need it fast … it is sad than as the article states some do not want to go ahead and help when they are offered jobs which promise them pay after they are done due to the abuses they suffered after Katrina , hopefully the same will not happen this time . by the way anyone who actually reads the article will see than there is work for everyone , plus if the contractors aren’t even asking for papers then ANYONE can go ahead and stand up in Home Depot with the laborers to wait for a job , as simple as that .

People says here that those are the jobs that belong to the americans carpenters and construction workers. Why the americans don’t go over there and start working? Nobody is stopping them, right?

Sounds like they found yet another devastating situation to take advantage of! These Illegals are not saints! They are just undercutting an already overcrowded construction market. The work would get done with or without them only difference is it would get done right but someone who actually owns a business license.
I think your trying to legitimize Illegals presence in the the country when there is no legitimate reason for them to be here.
Anyone hiring them should face legal action and be very ashamed for doing so instead of hiring their American Citizen counterparts!

Getting paid is not “helping” its working illegally!
If an illegal alien shot me in the back and took my money you would praise him saying he is helping to jump start the economy with his new found cash!

Have you seen George Lopez’s stand-up bit where he basically says “What is this craziness about not wanting Latinos in the US? Don’t people understand who helped out after Katrina? FEMA… Find Every Mexican Available.”

And that’s the gospel truth. So many of us talk about doing, but so few actually walk the walk. I personally know of a Mexican (yes, illegal) who wanted to put in a cement drainage system in the parking lot of the apartment complex he lives because he didn’t like all the flooding whenever it rained. I told him to talk to the office… maybe they’d pay him! He said “No. I just want to fix it.”

I thought he was completely CRAZY, but it just goes to show you the pride a lot of them have in themselves, their work and their homes. So, I guess it proves that they’re not all in it for the money. Many just want to help out and make at least their barrio a better place!

Im in Houston and there are not as many as you think. Luckily Due to all of the federal agents here they are hunkered down in the shadows. Its actually nice to drive around and not see so many criminals hanging around waiting for handouts. I would take the debris over the parasites any day.

The illegals are not helping them, they’re getting paid cheaply to provide a service. Americans should be working those jobs and would be if it weren’t for greedy people who care nothing about this country.
