Question by Hail Freck <3: What are some good sites for Victorian Era history?
I’m writing a gothic-macarbe supernatural horror/thriller novel that takes place in the Victorian Era. I’m most likely setting it in England, though if I don’t find the correct ‘tone’ I’m putting it in America. What were some places that were more ‘Gothic’ during this time period in both countries? My friend told me that Sweeny Todd was set in this time period (even though it’s fantasy, if it is it would help a lot in the descriptions of the town and people) and that Jack the Ripper claimed his victims during this time. Help? Even books would be appreciated, but sites are preffered. Anything helps, even if you’re just spouting off random facts.

(If you're wondering, the novel is called The House on Violet Street)

I’ve used that site a lot for my British history classes. It has a ton of good information on it. I hope you find it useful.

Even for the MEGA MOVERS, some jobs are out of the ordinary. How about transporting a family business without emptying the interior–so the doors can re-open as soon as possible after the building is resettled? That’s just what happened with a Pennsylvania funeral home! Next, Maryland movers confront a 146-year-old Victorian house that is thought to be jinxed. For years, many have tried to move it, and all have failed after facing major issues with utility lines, clearances, property, and accessible routes. MEGA MOVERS proves that no matter how strange or eerie or haunted they will get the job done. Copyright The History Channel.

The Victorian House Explained (England’s Living History)

From the majestic rows of gleaming white terraces in West London to the grid of red-brick houses in northern mill towns, the legacy of the Victorian era can be found in every area of the England. Using his own drawings, diagrams and photographs, author Trevor Yorke explains all aspects of the Victorian house and provides a definitive guide for those who are renovating, tracing the history of their own house, or are simply interested in this notable period of history. The book provides a background to different phases of design throughout the Victorian age from 1830 to 1902. Various areas are considered in detail, including: the layout and use of rooms; fixtures and fittings; sources of heat and lighting; domestic machinery such as kitchen ranges and laundry equipment; gardens and outbuildings. Also included is a quick reference time chart with drawings of the period details that can help date them and a glossary of the more unfamiliar architectural terms.
