Question by Angel: Can anyone help with my wood trim in my old victorian home?
I have an old home built in 1904. All the trim is white. I am debating on stripping and refinishing, but someone told me that these old victorian houses had white trim originally. I know this is not true of craftsman houses (1920′s – 930′s) Does anyone have any insight on this? If it matters it’s a house in Minneapolis, MN.

Unless your home is a very fancy one and was built for people of means, your woodwork is probably pine with paint. Not everyone lived in ‘the grand fashion’. Sometimes pine was used and then painted to look like wood. You should do some research by finding an out-of-the-way area and gently scraping a small piece to expose past layers. You will also be able to see what type of wood there is after you get through the paint, and actually, Craftsman homes also had painted woodwork.

Definitely test a small area in a part of the house that is not so visible. I have been surprised at what was underneath the paint on several renovations. In those days, not everyone went down to the lumber store and bought the same material. I have found Mahogany underneath paint before. If you damage the trim, there are several historic trim millwork companies that can match the existing. Sounds like a great project.

This lamp works and is OK. The big negative (and it is a BIG one) is that you have to unscrew and remove the top of the lamp to get access to the on/off switch. There is no reason for this to be built that way, they just got lazy. It have it in my backyard now and it is a HUGE pain to have to go outside with a screwdriver and take the lamp apart just to turn it on or off. Very poor design.
