Question by Viktor-C’est la vie!: Hiring a live-in maid, do people still do this these days?
My wife, three kids, and I live in a large 5000 square foot restored Queen Anne Victorian. Our house has a maid’s quarters near the rear of the house with a bedroom, a bathroom, and stairwell. We’ve been contemplating putting this space to use by actually hiring a live-in maid like the first family who built this house in the late 1880s. Do people still do this these days? Is it safe? How do you go about doing such a thing?

It’s not common, but it’s not unheard of. I wouldn’t know how to go about doing it though.

Yes, it’s still done. The safest way is to use an agency, IMO, because they screen the candidates for you. You would be charged a fee, and I don’t now how much that is nowadays. A quick search under “domestic placement agency” yielded many results. This company works with employers (you) who are of high net worth. http://www.calendargroup.com/ Many agencies are specific to an area such as Chicago, Greenwich, Ct., Boston, LA, etc.
Before you contact an agency, talk with your wife about what you want from a live-in domestic. Talk about your price range and other things you have to offer as well as everything you want (Does the maid need her own car or would you provide one for official duties? Would you provide an average salary plus perqs? How many days would she work? How many hours/day? Do you have an age range preference? Do you want a beginner or a career maid? and so on).
Another advantage to using an agency is that they’ll help you with paperwork and suggestions for how to proceed.
