Question by J: I don’t want my grandma’s house to get knocked down…?
(nothing to do with polls and surveys but I get good answers here…

Yes, so, I don’t want it to get knocked down, neither does my grandma. She own a terrace house in a row of five. Over the years, a lady bought the other four, but couldn’t get my grandma’s. She died in 2007 and then the family of this lady sold the four houses (it looked kind of stupid, house for sale, house for sale, house for sale, house not for sale, house for sale). A developer bought them and tried to talk my grandma into giving her house over in return for two apartments, which he will build. She had no other option, she was literally being kicked out of her first home, the one she’s had for forty years.

She moved out about six months ago and is living in my uncle’s house (not his home, but a house he owns for rent). She rented the place out to some people for six months. When they had moved out, I went with her to see it for the last time. The whole terrace was dilapidated, dirt, broken plasterboard on the house next door, she used to have a lovely garden and it has all been wrecked. She started crying, but tried to hide it. It’s a beautiful Victorian house and what gives anyone the right to take it away from her.

Houses have 3 stages in their life.

1) Wow, beautiful, big, new modern (new houses today)
2) Disgusting, old, (houses built in the 70′s)
3) Beautiful and full of character.(houses built <1960)

This whole terrace has gone past the 2 stages and now it's up to the 3rd stage. It's going to take at least 50 years for this new apartment block to come to stage three. I can just imagine, in the future, there will be something on these terraces stating...

'These beautiful homes, demolished in 2010, and replaced with an ugly 2010 apartment block, why didn't someone stop them?'

The house next door to it has been knocked down and huge cracks appeared in the wall, the window frames were falling out of place, the floorboards were creaking everywhere. I remember the top panel of the one of the sash windows have fallen down, so I pulled it back up, locked it, walked out of the room, looked at the room for one last time, then closed the beautiful four panelled door. I will never forget that, I walked under the arch in the hallway towards the front door, looked back at the arch with my grandma, then locked the door.

No one in my family wants it to get knocked down, except my dad, but the owner of the house doesn't, is that all that matters? She had the option of keeping her house but it would look really stupid, having apartments either side of it.

How can we look at it in a positive way? (sorry for being long)
Are you serious, a 14 year old buying a new house... if you insist.

If you’re looking for house plans for an old house or are remodeling an old house, start here. These are plans for real houses the way they actually were built, not the way somebody thinks people want them built today. It’s a great book, with elevations and floor plans complete with measurements. There are also a lot of other schematics, for windows, doors, stairs, paneling, wainscotting, etc.
