Are you concerned about Google putting a photo of your house online?
Question by Simon J: Are you concerned about Google putting a photo of your house online?
Google are planning to take detailed photos of the streets of Britain’s major cities and put them online as part of Street View, like they’ve done in the States. Apparently they will be detailed enough to show people’s houses, cars parked outside and people in the streets. Is this an invasion of our privacy? Are you worried that companies will be able to see what type of houses we live in, and therefore better judge our income, to go on to bombard us with double glazing, motor insurance etc. Or do you think that having a detailed photographic view of a street will be a great benefit to you?

since it is not live footage its not too bad
No, not worried at all… actually, living in antwerp, my house and car was already visible on google maps. If someone wants to find out what house I live in, and what car I drive, they can easily find out. Someone who is not looking for it, will not care about it either.
I drive a citroen btw :-)

I live in the US and we already have live cams and google maps can show satellite images of property…any property. The pics are about 6 months old from what I can tell.
I have seen my house several times. The pics are from different times of the year so I can guess how long ago they were taken. I’ve seen within 50 feet of my house.
I think it could be kind of scary in a stalker situation. But could also be a safety measure. I have mixed feelings about Someone, potentially, being able to see my every move.
Our society is a give me now one. People want information the easiest, quickest way. What better way than to be able to go to a website and look from the comfort of your office?
I’m sorry but I live in the States but I don’t think there’s much to worry about. Unless you basically say, “HEY I LIVE HERE RIGHT HERE BECAUSE YOU CAN SEE ME ON GOOGLE” nobody is going to find you. If they do see your house they shouldn’t know that it is you unless you’ve told them already.
And if that’s the case, seeing your home from a satellite isn’t what you have to worry about. It’s if they show up at your door.
I don’t think there are any MAJOR benefits to having your home being shown up on a map, but I don’t think there are any real negatives. Companies already target specific regions and areas with advertising, a google map isn’t going to really change that.
